Nippon Life Insurance: Asked Olympus For Explanation To Ease Market Concerns

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Nippon Life Insurance, the largest shareholder of Olympus Corp. (7733.TO) said Thursday that it has asked the Japanese manufacturer to provide a clear explanation to all shareholders to dispel market concerns surrounding the sudden resignation of its chief executive.

“We asked for a clear explanation that can dispel market uncertainty,” company spokesman Akira Tsuzuki said.

He declined to disclose when the company, which held a 8.3% stake in Olympus as of March, contacted the maker of cameras and medical equipment.

Former Olympus chief executive Michael Woodford, who was fired Friday, has claimed he was removed after raising questions about payments relating to acquisitions made before he joined the Olympus board.
